*Starting salary is dependent upon qualifications, but in most cases is no higher than the midpoint for the range.NATURE OF WORK:This full-time position manages Library Safety by ensuring a safe, secure and pleasant environment for Library visitors and staff through the enforcement of Library rules, keeping in mind the Library's goal of access for all and equal treatment of all. This position hires, trains, supervises, schedules, evaluates and coordinates the activities and performance of Safety staff as they provide services to the patrons and staff of the Evanston Public Library at both the Main Library and the Robert Crown Branch Library. This person should be passionate about working with the public and staff that serve the public. This position works closely with the Library Social Worker to identify patrons in need and to connect them to appropriate resources. This person has significant accountability for ensuring customer satisfaction with Library services. This person is expected to provide leadership to the division and department in Library Safety and to work collaboratively with other members of the Administrative Team to develop system-wide procedures and training.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Specific assignment will include some or all of the following):

  • Coordinates and supervises the work activities of the Safety Monitors at both library locations.
  • Reviews on a daily or as-needed basis the performance of staff for accuracy, completeness, and in relation to customer-service standards. Monitors staff by patrolling with them.
  • Participates in the new employee recruitment and selection process.
  • Plans and conducts staff training and team meetings.
  • Encourages teamwork and motivates employees using human relations skills.
  • Administers disciplinary action, including oral and written reprimands, in consultation with the Library Assistant Director and Executive Director.
  • Serves on the Library's Administrative Team.
  • May serve as senior staff member in charge of the building (Person-in-Charge).
  • Develops and implements preventative measures against potential risks, including regular evaluation of the library's emergency operations procedures, daily safety measures, etc.
  • Evaluates all aspects of Safety staff and services through a trauma-informed and equity lens that seeks to provide library services to diverse Evanstonresidentsin a manner that is consistently equitable and inclusive.
  • Engages with patrons and staff in a positive, effective manner.
  • Provides excellent customer service to all staff and visitors.
  • Defuses conflicts among library visitors.
  • Proactively works with Safety Monitors, the Library's Social Worker and other staff to prevent problem situations.
  • Ensures a departmental climate that offers library patrons courteous and respectful service.
  • Works with library staff to prevent and manage incidents occurring on library property, including preparing and reviewing written incident reports and completing necessary follow-up on incidents.
  • Contacts Police as needed, including filing complaints and making court appearances.
  • Maintains professional working relationships with Evanston Police personnel, Robert Crown Community Center security staff, and local organizations serving the patrons that frequent the library.
  • Ensures all security systems are working properly.
  • Closes and secures the Main Library. May open the Main Library. May open, close and secure the Robert Crown Branch Library.
  • Coordinates scheduling of Safety Monitors.
  • Participates in safety/security related meetings as a representative of the Library.
  • Reads professional literature and maintains working knowledge of latest trends in the field of library security.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:
    • Must possess a bachelor's degree. Degree in Social Work or Public Safety related field preferred
    • Must have five (5) years related work experience, preferably working safety in a library, shelter, community center, or other organization that serves the public
    • Must possess two (2) or more years of work experience in a supervisory capacity.
    • Must be able and willing to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:
      • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of customers and staff throughout the Library, as well as outside the organizations.
      • Ability to effectively deescalate a wide variety of conflicts.
      • Ability to lead a team, triage and respond effectively to complex situations in the moment.
      • Ability to model positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and compassion when working with customers, coworkers, and community.
      • Knowledge of restorative justice practices and/or other positive approaches to behavior
      • CPI-certified or equivalent nonviolent crisis intervention training preferred.
      • Ability to communicate effectively, comfortably and intelligibly in person, on the phone and in writing.
      • Ability to handle a wide variety of activities and confidential matters with discretion.
      • Ability to multitask many variable duties, requests and responsibilities.
      • Ability to read, understand and interpret manuals, policies and procedures, rules, regulations, journals, memos, letters, reports and legal documents.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:The supervisor is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions.Ability to perform heavy manual labor including lifting and moving heavy objects, bending, stooping, climbing ladders, and stripping floors.Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly in order to move objects.Ability to lift chairs and tables, and deliver heavy materials and equipment.Ability to work outdoors, occasionally, in a variety of weather conditions such as extreme cold, high winds, rain, snow, sleet, high temperatures and humidity.SUPERVISION:Under the supervision of the Library Assistant Director, work is performed with the guidance of managerial staff. This supervisor has contact with other Library and City staff at all levels, and uses the necessary resources to meet and achieve goals and/or objectives. Work is assigned through specific projects and customer/staff requests. The supervisor is responsible for prioritizing work tasks for their staff, and for identifying and utilizing the appropriate resources to resolve a problem or situation and/or research and analyze specific requests. Work performance is reviewed through observation, completion of projects, status reports, conferences and meetings. Guidance is provided through the City Code, departmental policies, City operating practices and procedures, and other resources as applicable to specific projects assigned. Work is evaluated at least annually, with respect to quality, quantity, customer service, problem-solving ability and performance in accordance with this classification standard.PUBLIC CONTACT:The employee has regular and frequent contact with the general public.Chosen candidates will be required to provide proof of licenses, certifications, and education required for this position.
