Specialist/BYC Therapist provides a range of therapeutic services
including brief and crisis intervention, short-term (3-24 sessions)
and some longer-term (25 sessions+) therapy, and group therapy for
youth ages 12-24 experiencing homeless and/or unstably housed and
participating in services and milieu programming at BYC. The client
population includes gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and gender
non-conforming youth, the youth of color, youth living with HIV,
and youth living with severe mental needs. The Healing
Specialist/BYC Therapist assesses for suicide and homicide risk,
supporting the primary care team and other BYC Staff in safety
planning and emergency intervention with youth clients. Care is
embedded in trauma-informed, harm-reduction, anti-oppression, and
restorative/transformative justice frameworks. This position
provides consultation and training to BYC staff, helping to
integrate behavioral health in all aspects of BYC programming and
care. Services provided will follow professional standards and
ethical guidelines. How you will make an impact: Provide brief and
crisis intervention services for youth participating in BYC
medical, drop-in, and other services through supportive counseling
and motivational interviewing. Develop and provide individual,
couples, family, and group therapy services. Assess suicide and
homicide risk of youth, leading crisis intervention efforts and, if
necessary, involuntary hospitalization. Screen for and link young
people with internal psychiatry, suboxone services, and ongoing
therapy services. Support young people in accessing external and
internal mental health resources as needed. Screen and support
young people in partnership with the medical team (primary care
provider, nurse, medical assistant, youth benefit coordinator,
etc.). Provide timely, succinct feedback to the medical team for
care planning and implement brief interventions to improve
treatment adherence and the young person's attainment of their
health goals. Provide timely and succinct feedback to resource
advocates, drop-in workers, and linkage to care workers, and other
staff regarding client conditions and possible barriers to care for
shared clients. Develop and implement innovative behavioral health
programming at BYC in collaboration with the Manager of Therapy
Services at BYC, Coordinator of Therapy Services BYC, other Healing
Specialist/BYC Therapist/s at BYC, and BYC staff based on
identified client and/or staff needs. Assist in training BYC staff
on suicide assessment, crisis intervention, documentation, safety
planning and care planning, supportive intervention and
communication, and other mental health topics to increase BYC staff
comfort/confidence in helping youth manage emotional distress and
develop coping skills. Consult with BYC staff on the implementation
of supportive intervention and communication with youth engaged in
different BYC services (i.e., medical, resource advocacy, mental
health advocacy, GED, medical care, research, group programming,
drop-in milieu). Participate in the development and implementation
of youth care plans and transformative/restorative justice
initiatives through individual work with clients and staff, and
through CHAT and care team meetings. Participate in BYC committees,
project teams, and other meetings as necessary. Document contact
with youth and progress of youth concisely in the electronic
medical record in accordance with policies and procedures. Complete
mental health assessments to support youths' housing applications.
Provide clinical supervision to practicum/internship students
engaged in drop-in milieu intervention and/or individual or group
therapy at BYC. Offer consultation and support to paraprofessional
staff engaged in direct service at BYC. Ensure the highest quality
of care by collaborating with other disciplines (i.e., medical,
resource advocacy, psychiatry, linkage to care, outreach, drop-in
workers) to improve client mental and physical health. Participate
in quality assurance activities including program evaluation, staff
development, continuing education, and outcome assessment.
Participate in site visits and grant development meetings for
behavioral health funding at BYC. Participate in required meetings,
including BYC, behavioral health department and program meetings,
agency committee meetings, agency all staff meetings, training, and
group consultation. Maintain the highest level of patient
confidentiality. Provide education to youth, the general public,
and other professionals through public speaking engagements and
workshops.What you will bring to Howard Brown Health Minimum
Qualification: Masters or doctoral degree in social work,
counseling, psychology or a related field. Demonstrated experience
in suicide assessment, brief/crisis intervention, and consultation.
Previous experience working with LGBTQ homeless and/or at-risk
youth ages 12-24. Prior knowledge and experience with clients who
are living with HIV, and with diverse communities, particularly the
LGBTQ community and youth of color. Prior experience working with
transgender, gender non-conforming, and genderqueer youth.
Experience utilizing trauma-informed, harm reduction,
anti-adultism, and strength-based approaches. Must be able to
demonstrate strong communication, organization, and writing skills.
Must be able to work some evenings and possibly Saturdays.
Preferred Qualification: Bilingual speakers -are highly preferred
(English/Spanish). Current IL state licensure as a Licensed
Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Clinical Professional
Counselor, (LCPC), or as a licensed clinical psychologist in
Illinois. Fluent in Spanish; ability to provide clinical services
fluently in Spanish and in English. Knowledge of health
disparities, substance use, and intimate partner violence issues
within the LGBTQ community. Experience providing family mediation.
Demonstrated experience in clinical supervision and consultation.
Prior experience supervising interns or volunteers. Deaf/HOH
communication skills.
